What You Need To Know About Hair Oils: Benefits & How To Use Them

Like the skin, your hair needs moisture and a little oil to keep it healthy and hydrated. However, navigating through hair oils can be intimidating. There are tons of them in the market, but finding one that works best for your strands is the challenge. You want your hair to look gleaming but not to the point that it’s oily or greasy.

For example, thick and textured hair can benefit from richer oils like cold-pressed castor or coconut oil than lightweight oils. Ahead, we’ll explore some of the best hair oils for each hair type and how to incorporate them into your routine.

Grapeseed Oil

Grapeseed oil comes from grape seeds and is a byproduct of winemaking. It’s a powerful antioxidant ingredient and moisturizer, making it a perfect product to work into your strands. It’s usually associated with skincare and cooking, but it also works wonders for all hair types.

Key benefits:

  • It helps with hair growth. Grapeseed oil contains vitamin E, linoleic acid, and flavonoids, which are all necessary to support hair growth.

  • Strengthens strands. Does your hair feel weak and brittle? Grapeseed oil can help restore your hair’s vitality because of its rich omega content.

  • Soothes your scalp. Grapeseed oil contains essential fatty acids and nutrients that have anti-inflammatory properties to help relieve an itchy, flaky scalp.

Best for: All hair types, including color-treated hair

Castor Oil

Castor oil is one of the more popular hair oils because it’s also used to treat skin problems. This nutrient-dense oil has healing properties that help nourish and protect hair. It’s also used for hair loss, but there is no clinical evidence that it helps hair grow faster or thicker. Still, castor oil is a reputable hair oil that packs a lot of benefits.

Key benefits:

  • Contains antimicrobial properties. Castor oil helps fight fungal or bacterial overgrowth, resulting in healthier strands.

  • Increases absorption of other products. Other products might penetrate more effectively if you incorporate castor oil into your hair routine. For example, it works well with carrier oils like coconut oil to further moisturize the hair.

Best for: Those with dry, flaky scalps and weak strands

Almond Oil

Almond oil comes primarily from sweet almonds and is extracted by pressing the nuts to yield unrefined oil. It contains high levels of protein, omega-9 fatty acids, vitamin E, and squalene which is an excellent hydrator.

Key benefits:

  • Promotes hair growth. According to hair experts, almond oil contains a substantial amount of biotin that helps the hair grow as it stimulates keratin production and follicle regrowth.

  • Revives dull, dry hair. If your hair has been feeling and looking lackluster lately, almond oil can rejuvenate and bring the shine back to your locks. All thanks to its fatty acids!

Best for:  Damaged and dry hair

Use hair oils once or twice a week

Once you’ve picked the right hair oil, I suggest following the “less is more” route. It is still an oil, so using too much can result in greasy strands for you. For instance, if you have fine hair, best to use hair oils as a treatment once a week. If you have curly, thick, or textured hair, you can opt to use a hair oil twice a week.

Simple Tips on Cutting Curly and Textured Hair

If there’s anything I’ve learned as a hairstylist in the past few years, cutting textured hair can be really rewarding. Textured hair requires a specific care routine to keep it soft, healthy, and bouncy, and haircuts are definitely part of that care. From wavy to tight coils, there is no “one cut fits all” approach to cutting curly hair.

Luckily for you, I love working on beautifully textured hair! I’ve mastered different techniques for cutting and styling curly hair (just ask my clients!), so I’m excited to share with you what I know. Ahead, I’ve listed some do’s and don’ts for cutting curly and textured hair.

Do: Skip the Shampoo

Starting with a nice wash is one red flag you need to watch out for. But let me be clear: There’s nothing wrong with a bit of shampoo before haircuts—it’s just not the way to go with textured or curly hair. Shampoo fluffs up the curls, making cutting more difficult since the hair’s natural shape is gone. Remember to ask for a dry cut so that your curls are relaxed. So no shampoo but you might try conditioning the hair instead, which nourishes the curls.

Depending on how tight the curl is, sometimes I will fluff out the hair completely to see the shape to determine the cut I’ll give, the condition of the hair at the bowl, and then I style. In other words, when it comes to curls, cutting and caring for the hair is not a one size fits all method.

Don’t: Add tension when cutting

Doing so obscures the curl pattern, resulting in a shorter, possibly unflattering cut. Pay attention to how the stylist holds your curls when cutting. Less tension means your curls will not bounce too close to the head once released. There shouldn’t be a lot of finger tension and comb tension either.

Do: Mind the length

Length matters when cutting curly hair because it naturally shrinks up when dry. Talk to your stylist about how much length you want to be removed. When in doubt, always err on the side of caution and go for the “less is more” route. You can also consult this with your hairstylist. After all, they should know what’s best for your hair.

Don’t: Use any hair products beforehand

This is pretty self-explanatory. Hair products can weigh down your curls and make it difficult to see what the hair naturally wants to do, so it’s best to go au naturel when you visit your hairstylist. It’s always best to work with your textured hair in its most natural state.  Save your styling products after getting your haircut.

Do: Schedule a consultation first

I’ve discussed how important it is to choose the right hairstylist for you in a previous blog post. Once you’ve found the one, the next step is to set an appointment to discuss the ideal cut for your hair type. A good stylist always considers hair density, growth patterns, and different curl types on various sections of your head. You should also keep a few questions in mind so that your stylist has all the information they need before working their magic on your hair.

It’s time to embrace your hair’s natural texture

Consider yourself blessed and unique if you’re part of the curly-haired tribe. Whatever your curl type is, there’s a perfect cut for you, so don’t be afraid to try new styles that let your natural texture stand out.

Reasons Why You Should Invest in a Master Hairstylist

Have you had a salon blunder (or two)? Either the stylist didn’t give you the haircut you wanted or your hair color turned out to be very different from what you envisioned. These things can happen but shouldn’t if you know how to choose the right hairstylist. There is no ‘one size fits all’ when finding a hairstylist. What might work for someone might not work for you. It’s similar to looking for the right job or special someone—it’s different for everyone.

Professional stylists spend years honing and perfecting their craft. You want someone you can go to for years, so the decision to choose a stylist needs to be well thought out. The right hairstylist may cost more, but if it means investing in great quality haircuts, it will be worth it. Master stylists charge higher fees because of the years they spent honing their craft, and the amount of education they invested in to become better at the skills they offer you.

A master stylist pays acute attention to detail and communicates her ideas for your hair in a clear way. I’ve listed a few reasons why you should choose a master hairstylist and why you should start now.

You’ll get the perfect cut for your hair type

Booking consultations helps you and your stylist understand your hair type and find the perfect cut for it ahead of your appointment. I always tell my clients to bring pictures! Stylists love photos because these give us an idea of your preference and we can both discuss if the haircut will suit your face shape and lifestyle. It’s important to discuss these things beforehand so that you will be confident going to the salon and have a smooth experience.

No more going to other salons to “fix” your hair

Some of you have been there—desperately looking for another salon that can rectify a nightmare haircut. This is something that we all want to avoid. With the right stylist, you can save time and money because you will already get the artisanal haircut of your dreams.

Healthier-looking hair because of the right products

Some hairstylists use too much product, while others don’t use any styling aids at all. This experience might leave you feeling cheated because you’ve paid for a haircut that may be worth less than it actually is. It’s also a matter of using the correct products. When you opt for an artisanal haircut, your stylist carefully selects products to use on your hair. For example, I will use sulfate-free shampoo for color-treated hair because I know it helps maintain vibrance. I will also teach you how, when, and why to use which products on your hair and scalp.

Consistent haircuts, always

Hairstylists who offer artisanal haircuts put quality above all else. This means we offer consistency, too, because we know what our clients want. We design a style based on your face shape and head shape. When you don’t know which style to choose for your hair, you can be confident that your stylist will give you something you’ll love. The years of experience and level of expertise prove that a master stylist is worth your time and money.

ShineForth Salon is Your Place for Artisanal Haircuts

If you live in Oakland or visit the city and want to get a haircut, I got you. My clients are a testament to my craft, and rest assured you’ll have a wonderful time in my studio. No job is too complex or too tricky. Whether you want a color refresh or a completely new hairstyle, we can make it happen. I believe the key to getting a great cut is establishing a rapport with your stylist. After all, it takes a great amount of trust to let your stylist work on your dream hair!

Braided Hairstyles To Rock This Spring

We’ve talked about how braids are going to be huge this season. From classic plaits to fishtail braids, this style is versatile in every sense of the word. I’ve loved braids since the first time I’ve rocked them myself. They exude an edgy yet timeless look that can be styled for any age! They also give beautiful waves (even curls depending on how tight the braid is), giving you more options to style your tresses a certain way. It’s no surprise braids made it to the list of trendy hairstyles for 2022.

Did you know braids can protect your hair while you sleep?

It’s true! People with textured hair know this already, but let me share this tip with you. As you sleep, all the tossing and turning pulls your hair and causes it to tangle and break—we’ve all been there. Braiding your hair, whether in a ponytail plait or braided pigtails, reduces friction between your hair and your pillow. You can kiss tangles and unruly morning hair goodbye!

Below, I’ve listed three braided hairstyles you can try at home. They’re simple, easy, and you can even put your own spin to them!

Double-Braided Chignon

Watch the tutorial video I made for this!
Step 1: PREP is key. Grab your favorite styling products and apply as usual, but on dry hair. Try Rake by Reverie.

Step 2: Divide hair into two sections: top and bottom. Pin top out of the way.

Step 3: Create a ponytail in the center. Do this for the bottom section.

Step 4: Braid the pony and twist it around the ponytail, then secure with pins or clips.

Step 5: Braid the top, without creating a pony, wrap around in a circular fashion, and pin in place above the bottom section.

(Optional): Pull a few strands in the front to frame the face.

Single Fishtail Braid

Step 1: Spray the hair with a little Mare Mediterranean Sea Mist Spray, and brush through with a mixed bristle brush.

Step 2: Pull your back in a ponytail. Doing so makes braiding easier especially if it’s your first time doing a fishtail braid.

Step 3: Grab the ponytail and divide it into two sections.

Step 4: Pull one piece from the outside of the pony across the top of the left side over to the right ponytail.

Step 5: Pull one piece from outside the pony across the top of the ride side over to the left side.

Step 6: Repeat steps 3 and 4 until you reach the end.

Step 7: Secure with an elastic.

Step 8: Gently tug the braid on both sides for an undone, boho-inspired look.

Braided Tendrils

Step 1: Work a little Milk by Reverie into the hair, and brush.

Step 2: Create a center part.

Step 3: Starting on one side, grab a small section near the part and tie the rest of the hair back.

Step 4: Braid the section until the end and secure it with an elastic.

Step 5: Repeat steps 2 and 3 on the other side.

Step 6: Untie the rest of your hair and continue styling it either by straightening or curling!

Remember, braids are for everyone.

Spring is just the perfect time to experiment with different hairstyles, and braids are no exception. Continue to try other braided looks until you find your favorite. You can also incorporate each hairstyle into various spring outfits! Don’t forget to tag @shineforth.salon when you post your hair selfie on Instagram.

These Hair Colors Are Ready to Take Over This Spring

Spring is in the air, and I’d be lying if I said I’m not excited. It’s a season that brings forth new beginnings, from watching flowers bloom to spring cleaning. Spring is also a great time to debut a new look. If you’ve been waiting all winter to give yourself a hair color makeover, now’s the time! Whether you’re looking for a low-maintenance tone or a full 180-degree switch, there’s a color for everyone. Read on to see the shades that will rule this season.

Retro Copper

Reds made a huge comeback in 2021, and it looks like the color is here for spring, too. Warm tones are definitely in this year, and celebrities like Jessica Chastain and Zendaya have proven that it’s flattering for everyone.

Care Tip: Use a sulfate-free shampoo to keep your hair color vibrant, followed by a moisturizing conditioner to improve shine. Try Innersense Color Awakening Hairbath and Color Radiance Conditioner.

Balayage

This technique is elevated to the ‘ring light balayage’ for 2022. It’s called as such because it creates strong face-framing highlights similar to the effect of a ring light shining on your face. Unlike the old balayage, the lighter hue is applied delicately to the roots as it gradually gets thicker and brighter towards the ends.

Care Tip: If you have dark roots, make sure to schedule touch-ups (at least every four months) to maintain your balayage. Try to deep condition your hair every week to keep your locks soft and moisturized.

Luxe Warm Brown

The ‘expensive brunette’ look was big during winter, and it seems like the trend continues this spring. Rich, dark tones give an edgier look, but for spring, add some lowlights for a brighter vibe. The color gives a youthful look, too—the perfect choice for women in their 40s and 50s.

Care Tip: Since brown is a low-maintenance shade, you don’t need to touch-up every few months. Using a sulfate-free shampoo also helps in keeping your color vibrant.

Auburn

Meet copper’s edgier sister. Auburn reminds me of the 1920s when women dressed in sparkly flapper dresses and they wore their hair coiled to perfection. It’s an unexpected tone to try for spring but chic nonetheless. I personally think this shade looks great on textured hair, so I recommend you try it!

Care Tip: For reds, using a toning glaze will keep your hair looking shiny and moisturized between appointments.

Ash Blonde with a Dark Base

Of all the blondes, ash blondes are the most popular this season. This spring twist is best for those who want to go lighter but want to keep a dark base. You can also ask your stylist for a balayage to achieve this look.

Care Tip: Add hair oil, like Ever Recovery Hair Oil, to your hair care routine to make your highlights last longer and keep them from fading.

Spring is the best time to get colorful. If you’re ready for a hair refresh, book an appointment at ShineForth Salon and let’s get the perfect hair tone you have been longing for!

When Should You Switch to a Sulfate-Free Shampoo?

“Sulfate-free” has become quite the buzzword in the hair care industry for some time now. If you go to any beauty aisle, you will find yourself in a sea of hair products labeled as such. Technically, sulfate-free is the better option—but how do you know if you need to make the switch? Are sulfates really that bad? Let’s explore below.

What are sulfates?

To put it simply, sulfates are responsible for making your shampoo sudsy. They help wash away grime and dead skin cells from your hair and scalp. The most common sulfates you can find in shampoos are sodium laureth sulfate, sodium lauryl sulfate, and ammonium laureth sulfate, with the ‘-eth’ sulfates being milder than the ‘-lyl’ ones.

According to experts, sulfates are good cleaning agents, which is why they can also be found in other beauty products like cleansers, toothpaste, and more. When it comes to shampoo, sulfates may be irritating if you have a sensitive scalp so you might want to make the switch to a sulfate-free formula.

Who can benefit from sulfate-free shampoos?

Aside from those with a sensitive scalp, you should consider a sulfate-free shampoo if you have color-treated hair. Sulfates can strip off more moisture and color, leaving your hair dry, brittle, and even prone to damage. You should also avoid sulfates if you have kinky or frizzy hair. Opting for a sulfate-free shampoo can help maintain your hair’s natural oils to keep it moisturized.

Here are a few wonderful benefits of going sulfate-free:

  1. Preserves hair color

  2. Safer for the environment

  3. Helps retain hair moisture

  4. Reduces irritation

  5. Tear-free

One downside of using a sulfate-free shampoo is your hair might still feel a little greasy after taking a shower. Since sulfates are what make shampoos bubbly, you won’t get the same results with a sulfate-free product.

I recommend looking for organic or plant-based shampoos, such as Innersense. They have three sulfate-free formulas that I swear by—Pure Inspiration Hairbath for finer hair textures, Hydrating Hairbath for thick, dehydrated hair, and the Color Awakening Shampoo for color-treated hair.

I have these products in my studio and website, so if you want to purchase one for yourself, just send me a message!

Sulfates are not the evil people claim them to be

Since sulfates are only used in small amounts and low concentrations, they are not that bad for you. It all depends on your skin sensitivity and hair type. For example, if you have oily hair, sulfates can help lift excess oil and wash it away. There is also a matter of preference. If you love a good lather, a sulfate shampoo could be better for you! It feels like a self-care treat more than anything, plus the added bonus of cleaner hair.

The Verdict

You don’t have to throw away your current shampoo to replace it with a sulfate-free one. Everyone has different preferences and hair types, so it’s always wise to go with what’s best for you. If you have a better experience with sulfate-free shampoos, then this might be the time to commit. Some manufacturers use an alternative called olefin sulfate, which is a milder non-sulfate alternative. However, if you’re not keen on all this and just want that rich lather, sulfates are no big deal.

Easy Hairstyles to Try for Spring

The Spring/Summer 2022 runways gave me a lot of inspiration when looking for simple yet beautiful hairstyles to try for spring. The trends we have this year are a mix of modern and retro styles, such as the ‘mixie’ (a combination of a pixie cut and a mullet), and a lot of accessorizing. So, if you are thinking of switching up your hair for the new season, here are some lovely hairstyles you can try.

Have fun with hair clips.

Hair clips are not exclusive to children anymore. However, if bright-colored clips are too much for you, opt for sophisticated barrettes and hairpins instead. Look for something embellished with dainty pearls, crystals, or beads for an elegant touch.

Go sweet with boho braids.

Speaking of childhood hairstyles, braids are back with a bohemian update this spring. Think slim, face-framing braids that give off a cool 70s-inspired look. Braided pigtails were also popular on the spring runways but with a looser and more undone look. You can also try a fishtail braid for a more unique take on this classic style.

Try a middle part.

You have seen it come and go, but this year might be the time to finally give in to the middle part. It just works with any hairstyle—straight, curly, or wavy, long or short. This style gives a more youthful and fashion-forward look that suits all ages. The younger generation has embraced this trend with open arms, so perhaps it’s time for you to give it a chance, too.

Be tres chic with a messy hair twist.

With the cool breeze of spring, you don’t need to put your hair up in a tight high bun just yet. Just twist your hair up instead. You can easily do this in less than a minute. All you need is a hair clamp or U-shaped pin. Twist your hair all the way, tuck it in sideways, and secure. If there are strands or even locks of hair falling out, let them be for a relaxed vibe.

Headscarves are back.

Headscarves have been around for a few seasons now, and if you have not hopped on the hair trend train yet, this is the time to do so. Fashion a silk headscarf like a normal bandana, or incorporate it into a braided ponytail for a runway-inspired look. There are also other iterations to choose from, such as crochet scarves and infinity head wraps.

Keep it low-key with a low bun.

There is no denying that a low bun is one of the quickest and easiest ways to make your hair look fabulous in seconds. It is practical, effortless, and beautiful, perfect for those on the go. However, if you have more time to style your hair, try using an embellished clip or pin to add some sparkle to your look.

Which spring hairstyles are you excited to try? You can tag @shineforth.salon on Instagram so I can see all your pretty hairstyles. Who knows, you may even be featured on our future posts

5 Popular Hair Myths You Need To Stop Believing in 2022

You have probably had your fair share of hair myths thrown at you, from trimming your hair every 4 to 6 weeks for “faster growth” to avoiding conditioner if you have greasy hair. We have accepted these as facts without question, but just how true are they? I am here to help you separate fact from fiction so that your hair care game is on point this 2022.

Myth #1: Trimming your hair often makes it grow quicker.

Truth: The most logical explanation to debunk this myth is that hair growth occurs at the roots and not at the ends. Cutting your hair every 4 to 6 weeks will not make your hair grow any faster. What it does though is it helps with your hair’s overall growth because you are trimming the split ends, which can make your hair look more damaged (except for those who like to keep the shape maintained).

I recommend going for a trim between 8 to 12 weeks if you are trying to grow your hair out. Keeping split ends at bay will result in healthier hair growth. You can also upgrade your routine by getting products that nourish your hair from the roots to strengthen it. You will want to invest in supplements that help combat stress responses in the body and support hair growth and your general health and well-being.

Try Nutrafol supplements for healthy hair growth. Check out how.

Myth #2: Your shampoo stops being effective after a while.

Truth: This myth probably came from the idea that certain products stop working after you “get used to them.” There is little to no evidence supporting this theory, so you better hold onto that shampoo bottle before you toss it out and replace it with a new one. According to hair experts, switching shampoos too often may actually be worse for your hair. There’s a chance your pH balance will be off and might lead to a dry scalp and even breakage.

Myth #3: Older women should avoid long hairstyles.

Truth: Absolutely not! Hair length is not the issue when we age, it’s the state and health of our hair. As long as your hair health is thriving, then you can style your hair however you want—long, mid-length, or short!

Check out hairstyles for women over 40.

Myth #4: Plucking one gray hair can cause two more to grow back.

Truth: There has been no scientific evidence that plucking one gray strand can cause two to grow back. Each strand is attached to one hair follicle only, so this myth is most definitely busted. Time to let out a sigh of relief!

Myth #5: Air-drying is better than blow-drying.

We touched on this when I wrote about my favorite blow-dryers, but this time, we are getting into the science of it all. In theory, air-drying your hair seems better than blasting it with a dryer. Your hair strands swell when they come into contact with water. This means that the longer your hair is wet or damp, the more pressure it puts on your hair’s proteins.

One way to dry your hair without damaging it is by air-drying between 10 to 30 minutes (depending on your hair length and type) and using a hair dryer on a cold setting to dry completely.

See my list of best hair dryers!

2022 Hair Trends That Look Great on Women Over 40

They say life begins at 40, and I agree! You are more confident with how you present yourself, and you could care less about other people’s opinions because deep down, you are secure and at peace with yourself.

Speaking of confidence, your 40s is also the perfect time to find a signature hairstyle to express yourself. You want a haircut that is flattering, modern, and age-defying (yes, there is such a thing!). Also, hair care should be a top priority as many women at this age already experience thinning, brittleness, and even hair fall.

With that said, here are five hairstyles modeled by my own ShineForth clients that reflect a more youthful glow while still looking sophisticated.

Layered Bob

There are many types of bob cuts, but the layered version is a favorite. It has enough layers to provide texture in the front, allowing the hair to keep its volume. This style is an excellent option for women with fine or thinning hair.

How to Style: Opt for a tousled look with a volumizing spray, or create chic waves with a blow-dryer and a good brush. Nurture curls if you have them, and lock in moisture with EVER Recovery Hair Oil from Reverie.

French Bob With Fringe

I talked about bobs earlier, but this time we have the A-line style with a soft fringe. Bangs always come through with that youthful appeal, so if you want something completely new, I suggest going for this cut.

How to Style: If you have straight hair, keep your mane soft and smooth by blow drying and applying a RAKE Styling Balm. However, if you have textured locks, hair oil works best to keep it smooth without weighing the hair down.

Layered Lob

Lobs became popular a few years ago, and they are still a trendy haircut now. A lob is an edgy spin to the classic bob. It’s slightly longer than a normal bob haircut and draws attention to your face shape beautifully.

How to Style: Do a deep side part to add drama to your hairstyle. Apply a bit of the I Create Lift  by Innersense for volume and hold.  If you want to take it up a notch, add a dainty barrette or hairpin for an unexpected but stylish look!

Single-Length Cut

With the resurgence of 2000’s trends, one-length hairstyles are in once again. With just a few layers to provide enough movement and volume, they highlight your best features and frame your lovely face. If you can’t decide on which style to get and want to start somewhere “safe,” you can never go wrong with layers.

How to Style: Spritz on a texture spray to add more dimension to your look. For a sleeker look, part your hair in the middle and apply a little bit of lightweight hair oil to keep your locks smooth.

Pixie Cut

This sleek and classic hairstyle is one of the easiest cuts to maintain ever, making it ideal for those who don’t want to spend a lot of time perfecting their hairdo. Whether you have fine and thinning, or thick hair, this style is FRESH.

How to Style: Let me be the first to tell you that hair accessories are timeless. Pixie cuts are easy to style. Just switch up your look by wearing a headband or opting for a slicked-back look. Use a styling product with a bit of hold, like MARE Mediterranean Sea Mist  by Reverie.

My Favorite Hair-Dryers for the Best Blowout Ever: 2022 Edition

Thanks to the latest technology, achieving salon-style hair has never been easier. For instance, hair tools such as dryers have come a long way when it comes to quality. In addition to giving you a gorgeous blowout, some of the best hair-dryers we have today contribute to hair health.

There's a pervading belief that blow-drying the hair is damaging. Tim Moore, PhD in Microelectronics from Cambridge University and Chief Technology Officer at Good Hair Day, explains, “Hair can absorb up to 30 per cent of its own weight in water. The longer it stays wet, the worse things get, as it continues to swell.” All that water affects the molecular structure of your hair, weakening it. It’s healthier for the hair to be quickly and properly dried rather than prolonging its wet and weakened state. This means having the right blow-dryer can make a huge difference and is more crucial than ever.

Generally, there are five things that I look for in a dryer: weight, length, multiple heat options, a cold shot button, and design (who doesn’t want a stylish hair-dryer?!). I took the liberty to give you a roundup of my favorite blow-dryers so that you have an idea where to start. Check them out below.

What Makes a Great Hair-Dryer?

The first two factors—weight and length—are important if you travel frequently or use a blow-dryer regularly. You want something weighty enough to know it’s good quality but light enough for you to use comfortably. I like using the nozzle that usually comes with a dryer. It directs the airflow exactly where you point it and dries the hair quickly. Length, on the other hand, is crucial as well because when you’re drying your hair, it can be more challenging or even uncomfortable if the barrel is too long.

When it comes to heating options, simple is best. You only need three settings: hot, medium, and a cool shot button to set your style. You can spend $99 on a dryer or splurge on fancier ones that cost $400 and up. At the end of the day, it’s about finding a blow-dryer that works for you.

Here are my recommendations:

1. Bio Ionic GoldPro Travel Dryer

For professional-quality results that last, check out the Bio Ionic GoldPro Travel Dryer. You can't beat the price point on this one. It's stylish and has the Bio Ionic Moisturizing Heat™ Technology that keeps your hair soft and healthy. This dryer also folds up, making it easy to pack for a quick weekend getaway (are we doing that yet?).

Shop Bio Ionic dryers.

2. Ergo TT2000 Blow Dryer

The Ergo TT2000 Blow Dryer is a godsend for those who want an ergonomic design that delivers. I haven't tried it personally, but I know many stylists who have this as their holy grail hair tool. It has a small body, so it’s easy to hold and is portable, plus the 10-foot cord allows you to move around and style with ease. It’s definitely a must-buy if you want an everyday dryer that gets the job done in a jiff.

Shop Ergo dryers. Use the code ERGOLOVE10 to get 10% off your first order!

3. IQ Perfetto Hair Dryer by Gama Professional

The IQ Perfetto Hair Dryer is what I use in the salon every day. Its sleek and ergonomic design is comparable to popular dryers available today. This dryer delivers incredible power with a 110,000 RPM motor, giving maximum results with little effort. It’s also light enough for me to use all day long without any discomfort on my wrist. If you’re willing to pay more for an everyday tool that can stand daily usage, this will be perfectly sufficient for you, along with the Ergo and Bio Ionic dryer.

Shop Gama Professional dryers.

I am thrilled to bring in the new year. This time of year is all about envisioning what I want my life, my business and focus to be about. How about you?

This year, my focus and commitment continues to be about bringing you the best attention I can by taking care of myself, and sustaining good, positive energy and health.

In looking for hair color and hair design inspiration I came across this article: "Negative Space" Hair Is the Coolest Winter Color Technique Every London It Girl Is Wearing.

And if you are looking for those hues that speak to the more colorful, Blue seems to be it. The image that captures my heart is this well-executed color. and this one I love! Blush tones are a softer way of playing with hair color. These all require lightening the hair first, then toning with an overlay of color. I use the Balayage technique to achieve these looks. sometimes less is more.

Hairstyle Ideas For Teen Girls

Have you or your daughter, niece or granddaughter given up on trying to style their hair, or don’t have many ideas themselves on how to style their hair. The hairstyle ideas for teen girls below will help jumpstart your styling just in time for school. Share this article with them, print it out. Most of all, have fun.

Medium Base Ponytail

This hairstyle will always make you look fresh and youthful. This is one of the easiest and best hairstyles that you can try. You can try this hairstyle with ease at home and never feel out of step, as it is classic and so versatile.

How To Style

1.    On clean, dry hair, apply serum or pommade gently through the mid-length and ends of your hair. This will help add shine and secure the hair.

2.    Slightly tease the hair at the crown of your head to give it a tousled look.

3.    Use your fingers to gather all hair at the back of your head.

4.    Now, from the gathered hair, take a thin section of your hair from underneath the pony and leave it out as you secure the pony.

5.    Twist and wrap the separated section of hair around the base to hide the band.

6.    Use a bobby pin to secure the wrapped piece of hair.

Tight Knit Side Braid

This is one of the most popular teenage girl hairstyles. This hairstyle will make you look graceful and sophisticated. This hairdo is a good option to give your hair a new and different look.

How To Style

 1.     Part your hair on one side.

2.    Tease the hair at the crown with a comb. Apply Infinium #3 hairspray lightly.

3.    Gather all your hair to the side.

4.    Now start tying your hair to the side.

5.    once you have a grasp of all your hair, tightly braid the entire length into a regular braid.

6.    Use elastic to secure the ends. Spray again. You can use a little serum through the ends, like Lumi Control.

Dry High Ponytail

This hairstyle is perfect for you if you want to make your hair look more voluminous.

How To Style

1.     Apply a thickening spray, like Densite, throughout your hair. Blow-dry your hair to give volume to your hair, focusing on lifting roots away from the scalp with your fingers.

2.    Gather all hair at the back of the head and use elastic to tie your hair.

3.    Finger comb your ponytail to get rid of any knots.

Long Side Ponytail

Here’s how you can sport this hairstyle.

How To Style

1.     Make a deep side part.

2.    Now, take a brush and move all your hair in the opposite direction.

3.    Use a bit of Sleek and Swing on dry hair and use a flat brush to blow dry hair smooth.

4.    Use a flat iron to straighten your hair.

5.    Apply Mythic Oil through the ends to create shine.

6.    Make a ponytail by twisting the thin strand of hair and wrapping it around the rest of your hair.

Loose Ponytail

Give your hair a gorgeous look with this special trendy hairstyle. This dramatic hairstyle is great for everyday and special occasions.

How To Style

1.    First, spray the dry hair lightly with Beach Waves.

2.    Separate your hair into upper and lower sections by making a U shape parting from temples to crown.

3.    Now, pull out sections from the front and both the sides of the upper section.

4.    Gather the remaining bunches of hair in the upper section with a clip and secure them out of your way.

5.    Make a side part.

6.    Twist the side sections and secure them with bobby pins near the nape of your neck.

9.    Leaving a gap of about three to four inches, secure the hair with another hair elastic.

10.  Scrunch it up to create a bubble effect.

11.  Create one or two bubbles, depending upon the length of your hair, and you’re all set!

Side Braid With Bangs

This is a fun look and is still very popular. Braids are not going away anytime soon. So have fun with is look.

How to Style

1.    Create a part on one side of your head.

2.    If you want a clean, polished hairstyle, use a serum, such as Nutrifier Balm, brush through and brush your hair to the other side, and braid it loosely.

3.    Now, tease your hair with a light touch to create a tousled effect.

4.    Pull out the bangs to frame your face.

Subtly Tousled Blonde Braid

Do you have light-colored hair? Then this hairstyle will make your natural highlights stand out and look fabulous, as well as adding more interest to the braids.

How To Style

1.    Apply a little Volumetry to dry hair and blow-dry a bit. Brush your hair backward.

2.    Tie your hair into a fish braid, starting a couple of inches below the nape of the neck. You may need to bring it to the front to finish off.

3.    You can loosen up the braid once you have it banded.

4.    Pull out a few thin sections of hair to frame your face.

Take your time with these the first time you play. If you get frustrated, take a deep breath, and try again. Sometimes it is helpful to have these styles shown to you by your stylist. Don't forget that your hair needs to be trimmed regularly, and good products are worth the investment for your hair to really show off these styles.

Best Hairstyles for Short Haircuts

Have you ever wondered how short hair can get interesting too, instead of all the long hair you see in the magazines?  In this article, we offer different techniques and looks for shorter hair.  I think you will enjoy them, as once in a while it is nice to wear a different look. Although, sometimes it's a challenge to know what are the best hairstyles for short hair. So here you go.

Twisty Texture Bun

Create a loose and carefree style using random sections pinned into a bun.

How to Style:

1. Spray dry hair with hair spray, like the Infinitum #3 or dry shampoo, such as Next Day Hair, even though it's technically not a dry shampoo, it acts like one. It gives the hair a great texture and holds for any kind of hairstyling.

2. Twist the random sections up and use bobby pins to secure them. Choose pins that match your hair color. Leave a little hair loose in the front around your face.

3. Curl the loose end with a curling iron.

4. Arrange loose ends in a messy pattern.

Brilliant Bouffant Hairstyle

This hairstyle is perfect for those who have delicate hair. It will give you a smooth shape full of volume paired with a hair accessory.

How to Style:

1. Towel dry hair before you attempt this hairstyle. Add some of the Volume Envy Mousse with a comb.

2. Round brush your hair and blow-dry to get volume.

3. Use a teasing brush to tease the top and back of the crown of your head.

4. Now you will need to smooth the front portion and create a bump using the side of the teasing brush. Smooth the sides back and over your ears and use bobby pins.

5. Use Infinitum #3 at the end for touchable hold and finishing touch.

Delicate Curls

In this hairstyle, curls are pulled back in a partial and the hairstyle is perfect for a day look or accessorized for the night!

How to Style

1. First of all part your hair to one side. Preheat 1-inch curling iron and collect some bobby pins. Use dry shampoo or Next Day Hair to give your hair extra volume.

2. Use heat setting spray as you work through smoothing the lower sections with a flat iron.

3. Take 1/4 to 1/2-inch sections of hair at the top of your head, curling each and pinning back. Remember to leave the curl shape as is when you release it so it keeps its shape as it lays over the smoothed hair.

4. Spray with medium to high hold hairspray, my suggestion is Infinium #3.

Messy Faux Bun

This awesome layered crop is styled up to look as if its long hair piled up into a trendy bun.

How to Style:

1. Towel dry hair to remove moisture completely from your hair.

2. Work a golf ball-sized amount of styling mousse, Volume Envy Extra, through the hair with a comb.

3. Now use dry air and a round brush to add volume and shape to the top section.

4. Smooth the sides and back.

5. Tease sections of the top slightly near your scalp to give structure to the style.

6. Roll medium to large-sized sections near the back of the crown of your head forward so they look as if they’re in the shape of a bun.

7. Secure sections with bobby pins.

8. Roll the front forward in sections to create volume around your hairline.

9. Finish with a medium-hold hairspray, Infinitum #3.

Full and Elegant Hairstyle

Thick curls full of body and movement and style with lots of volume and make short hair appear longer than it really is!

How to Style:

1. Shampoo and condition hair with products designed for curly hair, like the Innersence Hair Care line.

Best-hairstyles-for-short-wavy-hair-3.jpg

2. Towel dry hair by wringing out excess moisture. Do not rub hair since rubbing will cause unnecessary frizz.

3. Work a medium to high-hold styling mousse, Volume Envy Extra through your hair with a comb.

4. Use a large, round, pronged diffuser to lift hair and dry on a medium heat setting.

5. Choose a light styling serum or hair oil to run through locks, gently working it from bottom to top to maintain the volume, but add shine to your curls.

6. Finish with a medium-hold hairspray, Infinium #3 for all-day control.

Play with these ideas, and enjoy styling. Take pictures and share them on Instagram with the hashtag #shineforthathome

Hairstyling Tips Every Girl Should Know

12.jpg

Have you ever wondered how the hairstylists working backstage at fashion week make their fabulous styles last under the heat and clothing changes? Here are a few tips that will help you feel more masterful in your hairstyling efforts.

When curling, start with the mid section of your hair

Do you want your hair stay wavy for longer time? Spray your hair lightly with Infinium #3 about 12” from the head, spraying with the grain of the hair. Then start rolling from the mid section of your hair to the ends. It will help you get long lasting waves, and keep your ends healthy.

Keep your bobby pins in place with hairspray

You must use hairspray if you have sleek straight hair, and you are using pins. Spread out your hair pins on a towel and apply dry shampoo, such as the Volumetry SOS or Infinium #3 to them. This technique will help your hair pins hold in your sleek hair.

Use aluminum foil to help curl straight hair

If you hair cannot hold a curl, then try using aluminum foil. Spray the Infinium #3 Hairspray lightly as described above. Then wrap a section of hair with a long strip of foil, fold and coil the hair into a curl and tap, tap, tap with a flat iron. Let it cool in the coiled foil till you finish the whole head or where you desire curl. You will find your hair holding the curls better throughout the day. The hair gets really hot in the foil, so watch your fingers and don’t hold the heat too long.

Use dry shampoo before you go to bed

If any day you don’t get time to wash your hair in morning and you know your hair need a wash. You can apply dry shampoo such as the Volumetry SOS at night before going to bed. This technically is not a dry shampoo, but works wonderful. The shampoo will work itself into your strands overnight, resulting in healthy-looking hair in the morning with some texture and body.

Try hair extensions for temporary added length and color

You can use hair exertions if you have mid length hair and looking to add some extra length, color or volume to your hair. The option is good if you are going to any special occasion and provides many style possibilities. Hair extensions are not ideal for long term but are an easy and convenient option to get longer, fuller, or highlights quick.

Keep your brushes working optimally by giving them a good cleaning

Cleaning of your brushes is very important and help your brushes last. Much like your shoes needing a polish to make them last, so is true for brushes. In order for them to perform, you need to clean the hair out first, then use shampoo with another bristle brush or nail brush. Shake out the moisture, them rest them bristle down on a towel to dry. Take time from your busy schedule to get your brushes clean.

Use your bobby pins as graphic hair accessories

Bobby pins are a great way to play. They come in so many colors now. Try a triangle shape to give your hair, or line five of them in a row to give your hair a modern look. This can be done in the fringe, nape or sides of your head. This is a simple trick that you can try any time easily and get many different and amazing looks. Let your imagination run wild.

Get your hairstyle to stay using cool air

You don’t need to remain dependent on hot air always when you style your hair. If you want to set your hair style best, then set dryer to cool and alternate between warm and cold air.

Pat moisture out of wet hair with a towel

Remove extra moisture from your hair with the help of towel when you come out from a shower, make sure you don’t rub your hair and scalp, simply pat dry.

Leave the last half inch of hair unwrapped when curling

If you’re curling straight hair, leave the last half inch of hair out of your curling iron to get a more natural-looking, modern look.

Use the ponytail tricks for quick curls

This trick works well if you don’t have enough time to style your hair. Spray a little Crepe De Chignon in your hair. Put your hair in a ponytail anywhere that you want and divide in two three sections and twist into little buns, and pin or band. Set your ponytail free after sometime to get curly hair.

Another trick to getting a fuller ponytail: Use a butterfly clip

Butterfly clip helps you get a fuller look instantly. Spray your hair lightly with Second Day Hair. You just need to place butterfly clip underneath your ponytail to get a fuller look.

Create the perfect twisty bun

Spray your hair lightly with any of the sprays mentioned above and with your head upside down, pull all your hair to the crown of your head, and twist, then swing your head up, and band. Separate the hair is bun to get a little messiness to the bun.

Flat iron your braids to get curls.

If you don’t have time to intricately curl straight hair, lightly spray your hair with any of the sprays mentioned above, and separate your hair into six or so braids and then heat the braids with a flat iron. Undo the braids, and you’ll now have curly hair.

Use your hands to apply hairspray

The best way to use hairspray is to rub on your hands and then use on your hair for better results.

Know your brushes

Do you know the purpose of each type of brush you use? Each brush has different purpose. So you must know which brush to use at what time.Large brushes are commonly used for straightening, small for curling purpose and paddle brushes are used for making your hair smooth.

Happy styling!

Hairstyle Tips For Men With Thick Hair

long-1024x574.png

Are you a man with thick hair? Do you feel like giving up when you look in the mirror and don’t know how to handle your hair? Or, worst yet, you have so much hair you get a build up on the scalp, because your shampoo isn’t even reaching your scalp? Lots of issues arise with thick hair including styling of thick hair. Check out these tips that will help you cut your styling time and help you maintenance your hair with confidence and remain in control of your thick hair.

1. Moisturize Your Hair

Thick hair tends to become brittle and look dull. Thick hair becomes dry because scalp’s oil don’t reach the ends easily, which is a big cause of dryness and split ends. So to avoid such problem, it is important to provide essential moisture to your hair on a regular base.

Look for shampoos and conditioners that contain avocado and full of essential vitamins to keep your hair hydrated. Fatty acid in these shampoos will also provide strength to your hair.

Use a conditioning masque for your hair.  Yes, your hair needs the extra conditioning of a hair masque.  They make them specifically for thick hair. Use this masque once a week.

Too many chemical treatments can also be a cause of dry hair. So if you use hair color then only use ammonia free hair color products. Also, if you get chemical straightening treatments, then you also need to keep in mind extra conditioning for your scalp and hair.

Simple home treatment can also be used to keep your hair moisturized and in style. Yogurt can help your hair get nourishment and shine. Apply yogurt to your hairs for 20 minutes and then wash with a good shampoo. Try this tip and you will see your hair shining and texture will also improve.

2. Brush Your Hair and Scalp

Even though you are a dude, you need to brush your scalp with a mixed bristle brush.  The long bristles will get down to your scalp, and the short bristles will bring out the oils into the ends and create shine, as well as condition your hair.

3. Add Definition and Try Thinning

Thinning shears are great tools to help you lower the weight of thick hair at the same time keeping your hair length. If you have thick hair, it is not necessary to try only short hair as thinning can help you in styling long hair. Don’t try this yourself. Get yourself to a professional stylist who knows how to use this technique properly. It is important to cut thick hair away from the scalp, otherwise your hair will be sticking out everywhere as it grows out. You want to avoid shorter pieces near the scalp. You can also use wax, or emollient pomades to provide texture and tame thickness.

4. Consider a Buzz Cut

Buzz cut can be a good option if you have thick hair. Buzz cut is a good way to control hair thickness. You will need frequent trimming to keep your hair in a good shape. This cut is so special and unique that it never go out of fashion. It's a simple and attractive haircut but before you try it consider your facial shape. These types of cuts suit best on a man with a long and oval face. With the new wave of barbering happening, you can easily find a stylist that barber as well. Looks like the Brooklyn Fade are great looks for thick hair.

5. Forget the Blow Dryer

When thick hair is blow dried, it can lead to undesired volume, and look like a cartoon character. For a tamer look, it is smart to allow hair to air dry, with a professional styling product applied to keep the frizz to a minimum. However, towel drying encourages hair to frizz, so it is better to use a cotton t-shirt or pillowcase on a wet head. These items have finer threads that will not cause hair to become unmanageable.

6. Consider a Long Style

Men with thick long hair can style their hair in different ways. They can layer, feather and comb hair in different ways. Celebrities are using past trends to style their hair these days. For example, the Elvis pompadour is making a comeback but with a slightly modern twist. You can use styling spray before blow drying to give more height and definition.

If you have a long hair, then few good tips can keep you looking best. Your hair is the main part of your personality, and look, so it is important to find a cut and to know which will suits you best. Though thick hair needs lot of care and certain ways to style, using the right products recommended by your stylist or barber is the first step to getting an easy and attractive look.

Spring Is A Time For Love

"In dreams and in love, there are no impossibilities." - János Arnay

wisteria_love.jpg

Does spring ever make you think of love? There is nothing more beautiful on a woman than being in love, and being loved. This is truly an aspect of life that gets put on the back burner, ignored, and taken for granted, maybe even unappreciated. The frustration of not finding love may take over, and our beauty subsides.

How open are you to love and your loved ones? Daily work and responsibilities can get in the way of your heart opening to the ones you love most. What do you do to remind yourself of love and opening your heart again to others?

A Huffington Post article titled, "7 Ingredients of a Healthy Relationship," by Rebecca Lammersen, she suggest some expected advice on love.

Love is one way we can get in touch with our creative self and our personal expression out in the world, in our work, in our relationships. The article, "Creativity and Love," by Lee Irwin (SIRR AL-BASIR) is quite beautiful and honoring of this unique relationship within ourselves.  He says:

"We create because we want to contribute, to add a nuance of insight or artistic or scientific discovery to the whole, to create an alternative to suffering or a lack of vision, to respond to human needs. We communicate our creative expressions to enhance the vision of others, and we receive from others the benefit of their insights and discoveries. The medium for this exchange is a deeply felt appreciation and love, a thankfulness whose heartfelt intensity is a foundation for individual freedom. We are free to assist others, free to be in dialogue for the improvement of human life, free to offer alternatives whose impact may change an inherited way of life, free to love others and to assist them in whatever ways we may discover together."

Here are some suggestions to inspire love: yoga, flowers, surrounding yourself with beauty and nature, igniting the senses, laughter, good friends, art, dance, poetry to name a few.

People finding "the one" brings such a glow, ease, patience, appreciation, gratitude and a generosity, not to mention a smile on one's beautiful face. Living a true relationship with oneself can bring that very glow as well. Life looks different through the lenses of love.

This Spring I've had the great privilege and honor of meeting my friend Sunni Sukumar and his partner and relationship coach, Milan Botica. They help people tune into the one, which happens the be the name of their work. Click here, or pass on to your friends who desire a loving relationship.

I wish all of you a life of love and creativity.

Enjoy the rest of Spring.

Spring 2016 Shapes and Color

When we look at what is happening on the runway, and what is displayed in the magazines, it is sometimes a challenge to figure out how any of it relates to us. However, we can use them for inspiration, whether using new tones for painting a room, or adding prints to your wardrobe, or choosing a new tone for your hair color.

Looking at the Pantone color charts is a fun way to get a sense of what will be coming down the runway. Then looking at how companies interpret these color charts into their products. Look at the color palette released by Sephora this season. Check out on line some of the beautiful mood boards that Patternbank creates.

In Meghan Willet's article for Tech Insider, she talks about the official colors of 2016.

HAIRCOLOR

You've noticed these tones in the hair everywhere, from muted and soft, to heavy saturation. We are also seeing a lot of melded colors in hair color as well. Yes, smudging colors together, so there are no hard lines. This can be done with natural hair color, as well as fun colors, to give an illusion of transparency.

Brondes are the new blonde, with rose gold effects, or golden, or icey, silver, "contoured" into the hair. Yes, contouring as you would with make up, creating highs and lows in the hair, but different than Foiling the hair. Using hair color to create depths and shadow with a less meticulous hair color application that creates a really pretty finish.

Rich browns are also a big hit, with choices that entice such as, Mocha, Coffee, and Chocolate.

HAIRCUTS

Longer Bob shapes continue to be a look for this season. Shorter hair lengths will continue to be soft, or edgy, complemented with a bold color, whether it be a cool blonde, warm blonde, with a hint of pastels. Check out Sandra Bullock's very pretty Bob, and her hair color is gorgeous.

Short hair is still very much a chic statement. Check out Julianne Hough's short hair, or Emma Watson's growing out Pixie.

There is lots of fun to enjoy with this season's offerings in color and shape.
