Want to Lose Weight Faster? Focus on Relieving Stress

Having trouble with weight loss? It could be stress.

Stress hinders weight loss for two reasons.   For one thing, when we experience stressful situations, our bodies release adrenaline and cortisol. While these hormones can initially act to suppress appetite, in the long term cortisol actually causes increased appetite.

Meanwhile, stress often leads to overeating as a method of comfort.  When stress hits, many of us tend to cope by indulging in our favorite junk foods!  So stressed-out dieters are hit with both hormones (increased cortisol, leading to increased hunger) and habit (snacking as a form of a stress relief). The combination makes weight loss difficult!

You can combat this effect with some smart thinking and a good natural weight loss program.  While you’re building habits to burn calories, don’t forget to strategize your way to better stress management. Here are some tips to get you started:

  • Eat a healthy diet with lots of fruits and veggies, whole grains, and high fiber foods. This is the fastest path to natural weight loss.
  • Get exercise daily. Don’t overdo it, though – too much exercise can increase your stress level.
  • Get plenty of sleep. Being well-rested is one of the best techniques for stress management. Additionally, lack of sleep can cause weight gain.
  • Avoid coffee and cigarettes.  They might be calming in the short term, but in the long term cause increased stress.

You should practice stress management and stress reduction daily.  Find enjoyable activities that help you relax.  Needs some ideas for stress relief? Try meditation and deep breathing; taking a relaxing bath; curling up with a good book; or watching your favorite movies.

Take the stress relief time you need and deserve, and you’ll find your stress evaporating along with those extra pounds.
